Los Alamitos, California, May 4, 1999: The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) announces that Sun Microsystems, Inc., a global provider of high quality hardware, software and services for expanding the power of the Internet has become a CENIC Partner. CENIC is developing and implementing CalREN-2, the nation's most advanced services network to enable research and education, as part of Internet2.
"CENIC looks forward to collaborating with Sun Microsystems in developing advanced networking software tools and services for use by researchers and educators in California and the nation," said Tom West, CENIC's president and executive director.
"Sun Microsystems has a strong track record of investing in California's science and technology research and education. It makes sense for us to leverage this investment and partner in the CENIC Associates Program. Researchers at CENIC institutions provide Sun with collaborators and testers of software tools that will advance the discovery and transfer of knowledge in higher education and later become products and services that can be sold in larger markets," Kim Jones, Vice President of Academic and Research Computing for Sun Microsystems.
In addition to Sun Microsystems, other recent industrial participants in CENIC's Associates program include Cisco Systems and IBM. The CENIC Associates program offers every qualified California company the opportunity to collaborate with CENIC in the pursuit of its goals and those of the national Internet2 initiative.
CENIC is a not-for-profit corporation formed by the California Institute of Technology, the California State University, Stanford University, the University of California, and the University of Southern California to advance the use of communications technology in research and education at California's universities. CENIC's Associates include Cisco Systems, IBM, and Sun Microsystems.
CENIC operates CalREN-2 for qualified public and private sector institutions for research and learning purposes. CalREN-2 is California's segment of the national Internet2 initiative that links over 100 of the nation's leading universities. CalREN-2 is partially funded by the National Science Foundation.
