CENIC to Offer VoIP Services in Collaboration with AT&T

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) is pleased to announce that we have collaborated with AT&T to continue to deliver a full range of VoIP (Voice-over-IP) services to CENIC member institutions.

VoIP services will still be provided to member institutions via existing connectivity to the California Research & Education Network, a statewide high-performance network that connects nearly 10,000 schools, colleges, and universities throughout California to one another and to educational institutions across the nation and the world.

Through this agreement, services will be expanded to include on-site installation, broader coverage for E-911, additional online user training and reference guides, and access to AT&T Professional Services (for additional fees) for advanced consulting services, such as call center, automatic call distribution, and custom telephone configuration templates. More importantly, this collaboration gives CENIC the ability to scale the solution to address the growing demand from our community for cost-effective communications solutions.

This collaborative hosted VoIP service will continue to use BroadWorks®, the VoIP software platform by BroadSoft®, and comply with SIP 2.0 standards. This solution incorporates the following core capabilities: basic and premium telephony features, integrated voice-mail, local and continental domestic long distance calling, unified messaging, and receptionist. Additionally, Web-based administrative interfaces allow local control of service management. Support for SIP trunking only is also offered.

Shifting to hosted VoIP services will enable CENIC member institutions to benefit from highly flexible operating and reduced capital expenses while providing scalable, flexible, and customizable services to end-users. The solution will also allow for integration with smartphones and other mobile devices, so that end-users can utilize a single phone number, whether in their offices or away, without sharing their personal wireless number.

“AT&T has been an incredibly valuable ally to California research and education,” said Louis Fox, CENIC President and CEO. “We’ve worked with AT&T over the years to ensure that CENIC member institutions enjoy the benefits of advanced networking, and we are pleased to work with AT&T to meet the voice communications needs of our membership as well. We look forward to many more years of fruitful collaboration with AT&T.”

This joint effort with AT&T is consistent with the terms of the original VoIP Services RFP released by CENIC in February, 2011. CENIC members interested in additional information are invited to contact Cliff Frost at CENIC.
