The University of California anticipated that the advances in technology
and communications which we all enjoy would mean increased global
competition. In order to ensure that the US would remain a world leader
in these fields, the University of California created Calit2 to drive innovation.
Among the many projects Dr. Smarr directs is the revolutionary OptIPuter,
a worldwide computer infrastructure tied together by high-bandwidth optical
networks — essentially a single computer whose disparate components
span the globe.
