Reporting to the VoIP Manager as part of the VoIP team, the VoIP Engineer provides design, deployment and operational support for CENIC's VoIP services,
which uses infrastructure owned and managed by CENIC. The VoIP Engineer serves as a technical expert on the VoIP team and supports external customers,
as well as internal staff. In addition, the VoIP Engineer may be called upon to represent CENIC in technical forums, such as meetings, panel presentations,
and conferences.
- Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist management and collaborate with CENIC colleagues regarding the overall architecture for CENIC VoIP infrastructure.
- Assist management and collaborate with CENIC colleagues in the ongoing enhancement and refinement of VoIP design, services, procedures,
and policies. Participate, at times in a leadership role, in the implementation of those designs, services, procedures, and policies.
Ensure appropriate collaboration with and hand-off to appropriate support staff of new implementations or upgrades.
- Provide technical support to other members of the VoIP team and other CENIC colleagues for all operational issues, training, and consultation.
- Along with other VoIP engineers, respond to VoIP service issues on a rotating 24x7 on-call basis. This may require working outside
traditional work hours, including at night and on weekends and holidays, and does requires round-the-clock availability whenever on-call.
- Monitor performance, capacity, and availability of the VoIP infrastructure on an ongoing basis. Recommend improvements in technologies
and practices to improve these metrics.
- Maintain awareness of and familiarity with trends and new developments in technologies used in, or appropriate for use in, CENIC VoIP infrastructure.
- Develop and implement proof-of-concept pilots and test plans for new features, tools, and technologies as appropriate for use in CENIC VoIP
infrastructure. Coordinate implementation of new features, tools, and technologies in the production environment and ensure appropriate hand-off
to support staff of production services, tools, and technologies as required.
- Represent CENIC in regional, national, and international technical forums as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Job Requirements:
- Education and Experience:
- Four-year degree in computer science or related field or equivalent work experience
- Strong working knowledge of enterprise telephone systems and VoIP technologies
- Proven demonstrable success with VoIP design, implementation and troubleshooting
- Background in network management and analysis
- Background in systems administration
- Familiarity with standard telecommunications troubleshooting methods
- Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
- Skills and Technical Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of current VoIP network protocols and standards including SIP
- Demonstrated ability to utilize network management and analysis tools
- Strong understanding of current VoIP technologies
- Familiarity with network security, firewall and VPN technologies
- Linux (Redhat) administration and scripting skills
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment, able to balance multiple projects and tasks and complete them successfully and within timelines
- Strong proficiency in written and oral communications
- Strong interpersonal skills, with focus on customer service orientation
- Highly self motivated and directed
- Keen attention to detail
- Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Special Conditions of Employment:
- Must be able to participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation schedule
- Occasional pulling and installing of cables in raised floors and overhead ladder racks
- Occasional lifting, installation and transportation of moderately heavy (25 to 50 pounds) and heavy (over 50 pounds) objects, such as routers and servers
- Valid non-commercial Class C California driver's license or equivalent license recognized by the State of California
- Must be able to travel within United States on multi-day business trips
- Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Programming experience using PHP, PERL, or other Shell scripting languages
- Familiarity with HTML, MySQL, and UNIX
- Familiarity with the BroadSoft BroadWorks software suite
