Reporting to the Director of Technical Operations, CENIC's Network Tools Engineer will
provide software development and maintenance expertise in support of CENIC's network
operations and management functions, as well as assist in measurement efforts for CENIC's networks.
- Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify needs and help define requirements for software used to monitor and manage large-scale diverse networks,
- Develop, test, and debug software, particularly in the area of network management applications,
- Integrate, manage, customize, support, and deploy software in support of CENIC's operational needs,
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve problems relating to network support software,
- Write, edit, and update documentation,
- Provide end-user support to CENIC staff for network management and related tools both those developed internally and those from external providers, and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Job Requirements:
- Education and Experience:
- Four-year degree in computer science or related field or equivalent work experience
- Experience working in a diverse, team-oriented, collaborative environment
- Experience in all aspects of the software development life cycle from formal user requirements definition through support of developed applications
- Experience supporting a 24x7 large-scale network environment is preferred
- Skills and Technical Knowledge:
- Expert-level knowledge of network and socket-level programming in a modern Unix environment
- Expert-level knowledge of IP network performance monitoring, management, and tuning
- Strong familiarity in working with SQL-based databases and building database-backed web applications
- Strong background in modern programming environments, including tools such as perl, CORBA, Java, SOAL, MySQL, python, etc.
- Strong understanding of network tools such as SNMP, rrdtool, netflow
- Understanding of modern network security practices
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Special Conditions of Employment:
- Occasional overnight travel may be required.
- Response to support issues on an on-call 24x7x365 is required. This may, depending on the situation, require work outside the traditional work hours, including weekends and holidays, and will require carrying and responding to a cell phone and/or other contact device, as determined by management.
