Reporting to the Director of Technical Operations, CENIC's Network Performance Measurement
Engineer will provide software development expertise in support of measurement and management
for CENIC's networks.
- Duties and Responsibilities:
- Install, test, and support CENIC's suite of network performance measurement tools including, but not limited to, BWCTL, NDT, and OWAMP,
- Work with CENIC and customer network engineering staff to resolve network performance issues,
- Provide operating system support for Linux and/or NetBSD servers hosting network performance measurement tools,
- Design, develop, test, and deploy software tools in support of network performance and measurement,
- Write, edit, and update documentation, and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Job Requirements:
- Education and Experience:
- Four-year degree in computer science or related field or equivalent work experience
- Experience working in a diverse, team-oriented, collaborative environment
- Experience in all aspects of the software development life cycle from formal user requirements definition through support of developed applications
- Experience supporting a 24/7 large-scale network environment is preferred
- Skills and Technical Knowledge:
- Strong familiarity in working with SQL-based databases and building database-backed web applications
- Strong background in modern programming environments including tools such as perl, php, CORBA, Java, SOAL, MySQL, python, etc.
- Familiarity with one or more current web markup or scripting languages, such as HTML, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript
- Strong understanding of network tools such as SNMP, rrdtool, netflow
- Strong understanding of network monitoring/management systems such as Intermapper, Cisco works, Rancid, and Cisco Transport Manager
- Knowledge of helpdesk ticketing system
- Familiarity with configuration and management of network devices such as switches and routers
- Understanding of modern network security practices
- Strong user-level experience with Unix systems, including familiarity with Unix shells
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Special Conditions of Employment:
- Overnight travel may be required.
- Response to support issues on an on-call 24x7x365 is required. This may, depending on the situation, require work outside the traditional work hours, including weekends and holidays, and will require carrying and responding to a cell phone and/or other contact device, as determined by management.
