Network Performance Measurement Engineer

Reporting to the Director of Technical Operations, CENIC's Network Performance Measurement Engineer will provide software development expertise in support of measurement and management for CENIC's networks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Install, test, and support CENIC's suite of network performance measurement tools including, but not limited to, BWCTL, NDT, and OWAMP,
• Work with CENIC and customer network engineering staff to resolve network performance issues,
• Provide operating system support for Linux and/or NetBSD servers hosting network performance measurement tools,
• Design, develop, test, and deploy software tools in support of network performance and measurement,
• Write, edit, and update documentation, and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

• Education and Experience:
  • Four-year degree in computer science or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working in a diverse, team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Experience in all aspects of the software development life cycle from formal user requirements definition through support of developed applications
  • Experience supporting a 24/7 large-scale network environment is preferred


• Skills and Technical Knowledge:
  • Strong familiarity in working with SQL-based databases and building database-backed web applications
  • Strong background in modern programming environments including tools such as perl, php, CORBA, Java, SOAL, MySQL, python, etc.
  • Familiarity with one or more current web markup or scripting languages, such as HTML, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Strong understanding of network tools such as SNMP, rrdtool, netflow
  • Strong understanding of network monitoring/management systems such as Intermapper, Cisco works, Rancid, and Cisco Transport Manager
  • Knowledge of helpdesk ticketing system
  • Familiarity with configuration and management of network devices such as switches and routers
  • Understanding of modern network security practices
  • Strong user-level experience with Unix systems, including familiarity with Unix shells
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills


• Special Conditions of Employment:
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Response to support issues on an on-call 24x7x365 is required. This may, depending on the situation, require work outside the traditional work hours, including weekends and holidays, and will require carrying and responding to a cell phone and/or other contact device, as determined by management.
