CENIC is a $50M per year nonprofit telecommunications (networking) company serving the educational institutions in California, public and private, and K-12 to research Universities.
CENIC's revenues are nearly all from member fees, with a small amount of nonrecurring grant funds. CENIC is financially healthy, the result of prudent financial management by the
Board and management. CENIC is an asset-intensive operation, with a large investment in networking equipment and infrastructure. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports directly
to the President and oversees general operations and management of CENIC. The COO is responsible for the effective and efficient operations and quality services of the corporation
and acts for the President in his/her absence.
As a separate corporation, CENIC's activities include the full range of functions: human resources and payroll for staff of 50, accounting, auditing, budgeted, contracting, facilities
acquisition and management, equipment acquisition and management, network design, and engineering and network operations.
The positions reporting to the COO, as CENIC is currently organized, are:
- Chief Technology Officer
- Director of Accounting
- Manager of Contracts and Legal Affairs
- Manager of Communications/Public Relations
- Project Manager
Among the major responsibilities of the position are to:
- Oversee daily operations of CENIC's vast networks, serving nearly 10 million California students, staff, teachers and faculty;
- Oversee projects to upgrade and enhance CENIC's networks;
- Be responsible for CENIC's financial operations, budgeting, accounting, auditing, purchasing, and inventory management;
- Manage the quality of services and the cost of providing them to assure a continuing value proposition for members;
- Manage all human resources functions, including Federal and State laws, provisions of CENIC's 403b retirement plan and related obligations;
- Communicate and publicize CENIC to its members and various select State constituencies;
- As requested by CEO, participate in various national and State bodies and panels;
- Maintain strong relationship with member organizations;
- Maintain strong relationships with CENIC's advisory councils; and
- Manage CENIC's corporate records (board minutes, corporate licenses, bylaws, etc.).
The successful candidate will have demonstrated successful senior management in education; demonstrated project management skills and experience; demonstrated financial management knowledge and skills; strong management, planning and decision-making skills; excellent organizational and written/verbal interpersonal communications skills; and, individual initiative and a strong commitment to success; comfort with technology.
CENIC offers a comprehensive set of benefits, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance. CENIC also contributes 5% of each employee's salary to a 403(b)
retirement plan. Additionally, employees can contribute on a voluntary pre-tax basis to the plan, up to the amount allowed by law.
